This mural covers a building wall at Chess Park, a small brick pocket park on West Indiana Avenue just off Woodland Boulevard in downtown DeLand. The painted scene portrays the city's late-19th-century origins — crowds of townspeople in period dress holding oranges and bouquets, with horse-drawn carriages before a grand building — a nod to DeLand's founding era and its early citrus economy. It is one of more than a dozen murals in downtown DeLand's public-art collection. (Note: an intake index labeled this location 'A Conversation over Chess'; the mural photographed here depicts the Victorian-era community scene described above.)
